Obituary of James F. Greeley
James (Jim) F. Greeley, 93, of Syracuse, NY passed away peacefully Sunday, June 30, 2019 surrounded by his family.
Born in Brooklyn, NY he graduated from Bishop Laughlin Memorial High School. He then entered the Army Intelligence Corp in WWII where he was stationed in Japan. Upon his return he attended Fordham and Yale Universities before moving to Syracuse, NY where in 1958 he landed the seasonal job he loved working in the calculating room at Vernon Downs Race track. He later retired after 34 years with the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance.
He was very involved in the community and cherished his time as President of the Valley Babe Ruth Baseball League. A relative of Frank Fogarty (the Dublin Minstrel), he treasured his Irish heritage especially the moments singing around the piano.
He was predeceased by his loving wife, Aggie of 52 years, brothers, Arthur and Charlie, and his parents, Arthur and Mary Frances Greeley.
He is survived by his beloved children, Mary (Sean) Walton, Ann (Dan) Nelms, and Jim (Becky) Greeley, his sister, Maryann (Ed) McNamara, brother, John (Mary Louise) Greeley, 5 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am on Monday, July 8, 2019 at St. Ann’s Church, 4471 Onondaga Blvd, Syracuse, NY 13219. The family will receive friends and relatives at St. Ann’s church from 9am to 10am prior to the mass. Burial will be in Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
