Edward B. Carrillo of Syracuse, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on September 11, 2015.
Edward was born on August 15, 1924, in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Aldo E. and Evelina A. Carrillo who had immigrated to New York from the Naples, Italy area. He was the third of six siblings who grew up in Brooklyn and Long Island neighborhoods and particularly in the Coney Island area of Brooklyn. He would later introduce his wife and children to the delights of Brooklyn, including the Coney Island theme park attractions, "real" pizza and Brooklyn bagels. As a young man, he served proudly in the US Army Air Corp, 15th division, 483rd Bombardment Group in Italy, where he achieved the rank of First Lieutenant. Edward initially served as a bombardier, and then he was the lead navigator in the B-17 "Flying Fortress". As lead navigator, he flew 27 missions over Nazi targets in the European Theatre, including Germany, Austria, Romania, and Hungary. After the war, he completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering at Pratt Institute in 1949 and soon after began a long distinguished career as a systems engineer specializing in the design of innovative radar technology at General Electric (GE). In 1956, he completed his Master's degree in Engineering at Syracuse University while working full time at GE. It was at GE that he would later meet his future wife and love of his life, Carole. They enjoyed nearly 61 years of a loving marriage starting on their wedding day of October 24, 1954. Together, the two of them would raise a family of six children.
Edward was a devoted father who will be remembered by his children as the epitome of a loving and supportive parent who inspired them to achieve higher education and continue his legacy of strong family values. Edward approached life with optimism, great intelligence and the ability to envision and plan for a happy future for his family. His pleasant personality, easy going ways and quiet dignity had a profound influence on his family, friends and colleagues. He especially enjoyed holiday dinners, with plenty of food and drink at a table full of family.
Edward was a communicant of Most Holy Rosary Church. He was a member of the GE Bowling Club and captain of the Alley Cats team; a member of the GE Elfun Society; and a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Edward enjoyed photography and was always with a camera at every family event as well as spending time in nature, particularly in the Adirondacks, and on the sand and in the waves of the Atlantic Ocean.
He is predeceased by his sisters, Lucille, Catherine and Adele. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Carole; his children, Suzanne (Howard) Carrillo Kern, Jeanne (Ken) Carrillo, Stephen Carrillo, Mary (Dave Alt) Ferguson, Elisa (Scott) Jacobs, and Margaret (Steve) Carrillo Sheridan; his 11 grandchildren, Christina, Stevie, Hannah, Rachel, Jaclyn, Michael, Rebecca, Natalie, Christopher, Evelina and John; his sisters, Dr. Elisa Carrillo and Mrs. Anna Carrillo Vitiello; sister and brother-in-law Marlene and Don Sabin; and a large extended family of several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
