Obituary of John C. Zrebiec Jr.

John C. Zrebiec Jr., 85, of Syracuse, NY, passed away Tuesday, August 19, 2014. John was a US Army Veteran and had a long career in law enforcement. He served as a Syracuse police officer from 1953 – 1973, retiring as a sergeant. He was appointed to Director of Security for Syracuse University, retiring after 20 years in 1993. While a police officer he was the recipient of numerous commendations, such as the PBA Merit and Valor award for outstanding police work, The Herald Award for outstanding police work, and Arthur Jenkins Medal for heroism and service. John was a longtime member of the Pastimes Athletic Club and numerous veterans and police organizations. He loved family, fishing and vacationing in the Adirondacks. John was predeceased by his wife, Catherine Richardson Zrebiec in 2008. He is survived by his children, Mary (Nicholas) Kendrat of Syracuse, Patricia (Greg) Tetor of Liverpool, Janet Flores of Highland Park, IL, and Timothy (Dana) Zrebiec Sr. of Manlius, his brother, Donald (Susan) Zrebiec of Fairport, NY, ten grandchildren, and one great- granddaughter. Services will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2014 at 10am at St. Ann's Church, Onondaga Blvd. Calling hours will be from 4 to 7pm on Friday at the Edward J. Ryan and Son Funeral Home, 3180 Bellevue Ave. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Geddes. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Syracuse Police Benevolent Association, 511 S. State St., Syracuse, NY 13202 or St. Ann's Church, 4471 Onondaga Blvd., Syracuse, NY 13219. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the wonderful and caring staff at the Hearth at Greenpoint in Liverpool for the great care they provided to John during the last 6 months.
