Capt. Edward J. McLaughlin, D.D.S. US Navy, Ret. 83, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2014 at his home. He was born Jan. 20, 1931 in Syracuse, NY, had been a Libertyville resident since 1976, moving to Chicago in 2012. He was a graduate of the Christian Brothers Academy and LeMoyne College in Syracuse and received his degree in dentistry from the University of Buffalo Dental School. He had a private dental practice in Syracuse before entering the Navy, where he served from 1961-1988 retiring as a Captain. He was very proud of serving on the USS Samuel Gompers and USS Fremont during his career. Dr. McLaughlin was the director of dental clinics in Norfolk and San Diego and retired as the Assistant Chief of Staff to the Navy Medical Commander of the Northeast Region. Following his navy retirement, he chose to become a prison dentist in New York for a period of time. Ed was a competitive speed skater in high school and college and a former member of St. Joseph Parish in Libertyville.
Surviving are 3 children, Edward J. McLaughlin of Syracuse, Meghan (Chris) Riley of Chicago and Michael McLaughlin of Vernon Hills; 2 grandchildren, Stella and Claire and his sister, Nancy (Joe) Medicis of Syracuse.
He was preceded in death by his wife whom he married in 1957, Lorraine McLaughlin in 2009.
Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Sat. Jan. 10, 2015 at St. Ann's Church in Syracuse. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Dewitt, NY. Memorial contributions can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
