Obituary of Kathleen Loughney Sgarlata

Kathleen Loughney Sgarlata, 86, passed away on Tuesday, May 19th. She was a 1945 graduate of the Convent School and a graduate of Syracuse University (at age 20), class of 1949. A lifelong resident of Syracuse, she was employed for many years on the supervisory staff of the Onondaga County Welfare Department. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Frank Sgarlata of Syracuse, two sons, Michael Sgarlata of Syracuse and Patrick Sgarlata of Ellington, CT. She is also survived by a daughter-in-law, Elke Sgarlata and three grandchildren, Kayla, Kelsey and Ethan also of Ellington, CT and several cousins both in the United States and Ireland. Kathleen spent the last two years of her life at St. Camillus Residential Health, where she developed many close friendships with both residents and staff. They will all miss her, and Kathleen thanks them for all the comfort and care they provided her. A mass of Christian burial will be held Saturday at 9:30am at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Calling hours will be held Friday from 4-7pm at the Edward J. Ryan & Son Funeral Home, 3180 Bellevue Ave. Burial will be in Assumption Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the Dominican Monastery, 802 Court Street, Syracuse, NY 13208.
