Obituary of David H. Littlefield
David Haven Littlefield passed from this life on March 29th, 2019 after an extended illness. Born on September 5, 1924 in Winchester, Massachusetts, he was the son of Ray and Marjorie Littlefield. Dave grew up in Reading and enrolled in Boston University. He was drafted into the US Army and fought in the European theater achieving the rank of Technical Sergeant and earning a Bronze Star. Following the war Dave attended and graduated from Harvard University. He later moved to Syracuse, NY where he met and married Mary Lockwood and settled in Westvale where they lived for 60 years. He taught English at Pebble Hill School for many years before moving to Onondaga Central High School in 1962 and retiring from there in 1986.
Dave was a man for all seasons. He loved history and literature and read voraciously. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying fly fishing, hunting, cross country skiing, skating, hiking, camping, gardening, baseball and especially sailing. He did his best to impart these loves to his children and the family spent many happy summers at the Massachusetts shore, visiting national and state parks, and sailing on the Finger Lakes and in Ipswich Bay, Massachusetts. He was a wonderful father, grandfather, and great grandfather and he will be greatly missed.
David was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Mary Lockwood Littlefield and his sister, Elinor L. Kollins, He is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Mary McTernan of Fort Collins, CO; a son, Thomas Daniel Littlefield of Marcellus, NY; a son, Charles David Littlefield and his wife, Rebecca of Watertown, NY; a daughter, Martha Jane of Syracuse, NY and grandchildren, James Andrew and Michael Patrick McTernan of Fort Collins, Colorado, Paulina Marie Quay of Adams Center and Caitlin Elaine Littlefield of Watertown, NY; great grandchildren Colette and Eloise Quay of Adams Center, and Tanner Czerny of Murray, Utah, and a niece, Susan Kollins Hutton of Washington, DC.
David’s committal service will be held at 11am on Friday, April 5, 2019 at the Onondaga County Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, Howlett Hill Rd.
