As a professional colleague, I learned only yesterday of Bill's passing. I send sincere sympathy and kind remembrances of Bill to his family. He was a friend to me for many years, and he was always respected as a good person and leader in his field. He was active professionally until the end of his life, as we were planning to write an article on cellulose together. His keen insights and deep knowledge will be greatly missed.

I am so sorry hearing that Bill has left us. He was a good friend and an eminent colleague who knew everything about cellulose and polysaccharides. Always wanting to share his knowledge with everybody. We had good times together in Syracuse, Grenoble and Mississauga (Ontario).
My deepest sympathy goes to his wife and his relatives.
Many people from Grenoble who have shared things with Bill join me to express our sorrow in this sad time. Bill will always be remembered.

It was with deep sadness that I learned of the passing of Professor William T. Winter. I have known Bill from almost the time when I came to ESF (in 1994) and found him to be an person who possessed exceptional knowledge in the field of carbohydrate chemistry. He was also very friendly and kind, and gave me sage advice, which I will always remember. Even after retirement, whenever he found an article of scientific or academic interest, he would forward its link to the College faculty. His dedication to scholarly knowledge and his presence will be greatly missed.
Sincerely,
Siddharth G. Chatterjee

I am so sorry to hear of Bill's passing. We served together for many years in the Chemistry Department at ESF. In addition to being a noted expert in cellulose chemistry, he was a valued colleague who always had the welfare of our department and ESF at heart. He was also always a champion for those less fortunate than he was. He always claimed that he was not an expert in the lab and could barely manage hot water extraction of tea leaves. I will miss his (sometimes sardonic) sense of humor.

A conversation with Bill would reflect his vast knowledge in science, politics and literature and always humorously unabashed in his position. A professor reflecting the true past history of ESF with many classes taught, often cited publications and numerous grant proposals. He will be missed by the scientific community.
