My deepest sympathy to Jan’s family & friends for your loss. I worked with Jan as a fellow nurse at the Syracuse Dev. Center. She was caring, professional and an excellent nurse. I remember going to her beautiful Victorian house in Syracuse one year as she hosted the nurses Christmas party. We had so much fun and she was a sweetheart! May she rest in peace and May the light of heaven shine upon her.

Thank you for recording the service. Good job, Tim.
There were a flood of emotions for me seeing the service at Rosary. You are all a part of so many many fond memories and your mom is a cornerstone to them all. Such strong character. She left an indelible mark on you all...that character will live on through you.

I remember Janet as my Aunt Janet, matriarch of the Syracuse branch of our family, presiding over the whole clan in the big, sprawling old house on the hill at Summit Ave. She was an extraordinary presence--always kind, always loving, always caring, and one of my very favorite aunts. I remember summering with her and my cousins at the Thousand Islands, and picnicking on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches as a child with her and my Mom out behind the house on Norwood Street in Albany. I'm sorry I didn't have the opportunity to see her more these past years. We send our heartfelt condolences to all my McDermott cousins and their families. We'll keep Aunt Janet, and all of you, in our thoughts and prayers.

I am deeply saddened to learn of your mother's passing. She was a true and close friend in every sense of the word. From the moment we moved onto Ruskin Ave over 65 years ago it was apparent that it was Janet's driving force that helped so many make the Strathmore neighborhood and Most Holy Rosary Parish the outstanding community we all enjoy and still call "home". With her encouragement our family even attained a second home on the beautiful St. Lawrence River.
Having done so much, for so many, she has now attained her cherished goal of everlasting Life with our Lord and Savior. While you can't see her now, she nevertheless is still very close and nearby, watching over and guiding each one of you just as she has always done. So, in quiet moments, pause and listen to her. I think you will then understand what I am referring to.
You all are in the thoughts and prayers of many friends. It is through our faith that we can understand and you will be able to get through this most difficult time.
With Love, the Bornhurst Family.

The loving matriarch of a beloved family on the corner of Ruskin and Summit Ave. With all the craziness of having 8 children and Shanna the family’s Irish Setter (of course!) and all the friends, relatives and onlookers, Mrs. McDermott was the embodiment of grace and kindness. She and Mr. McD raised a great family and were blessed with wonderful spouses for their children and loving grandchildren. All of us who grew up in those halcyon days loved her. She was kind and caring to the end and was always a joy to talk to. I envision the angels weeping with joy when she arrived at her well deserved final destination. The McDermotts hold a special place in our hearts.
