John was a big part of my boyhood and I'll always miss him. I grew up in the Balmoral Highlanders playing snare drum, and had the honor of marching and competing with the Solan family hundreds of times, in the U.S. and across Ontario, for many years. John was the heartbeat of the band, a natural timekeeper, able to navigate the intricacies of Don Reissig's amazing writing. Our section really kicked butt back then, one of the best in the country. I'll always remember his smile, his laugh, his talent, his dedication, and how kindly he treated me. RIP John.
