Obituary of Gerard M. Curtin
Gerard M. “Jerry” Curtin, 73, of Syracuse, NY died on Monday, August 14, 2023 at home, surrounded by his loving family, after a two-year struggle with cancer. Born and raised in Syracuse, NY, “Jerry” was the youngest of seven children born to Paul J. and Elizabeth Slattery Curtin. He was graduate of Christian Brothers Academy in 1968, where he was a standout football player, earning a scholarship to the University of Dayton. While at Dayton, Jerry met Maureen McKenna and soon after graduation, they married and eventually settled in Rochester where their son, Jeremiah, was born. Soon after, Maureen (Reen) passed away, and the young father and son moved to the family home on Stolp Ave in Syracuse where he met and married Maureen Bard, a single mother with three children. The two families merged in 1994 and moved into a house on Wolcott Ave in Syracuse. Jerry became a very talented carpenter and together with his partner, Bob Hadzor, the company specialized in custom interior woodworking, including exclusive homes in the suburbs and restaurants, such as the Sherwood Inn in Skaneateles and the Crown Restaurant in Syracuse. Jerry also fashioned some exceptional wood working projects throughout the area. Jerry was a communicant of Most Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Syracuse, where he has lived with his wife and amalgamated (united) family for the past 30 years. He had a great love of music and of his visits to Rehoboth Beach. He was also a devoted fan of the New York Yankees and NY Football Giants.
In addition to his wife, Jerry is survived by his daughter, Kristin Bard Linden (Adam) of Syracuse, his sons, Jeremiah Curtin, Josh Bard of Syracuse, and Justin Bard (Kalyn) of Ridgefield , CT, seven grandchildren including Jameson Bard, Hudson, Grayson and Harrison Linden, Sutton, Silas, and Remi Bard. Other survivors include two brothers, John P. Curtin of Marcellus, NY, and David W. Curtin of Bridgeport, CT as well as his favorite Quinn and Slattery cousins, and a great many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, as well as by his four sisters, Elizabeth Curtin Donovan, Margaret M. Curtin, Nora Patricia Curtin Caldwell, and Joan Curtin Hinkleman, two nieces, Joan “Pepsi” Caldwell and Julie Donovan, a nephew, David Donovan, and a great niece, Annie Curtin.
A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, August 22, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church in Marcellus, NY, Rev. Daniel Muscalino presiding. Graveside services and interment for Jerry will follow the Mass at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Marcellus, NY. Friends may call at the Edward J. Ryan Funeral Home, Bellevue Ave, Syracuse, from 4 – 7 p.m. on Monday, August 21.
