Obituary of Christine T. Smith
Christine T. Smith of Syracuse, passed away peacefully in her home of 58 years on November 4, 2023, with her loving family around her at the age of 100.
Born to William F. and Mary Horan in Danbury, CT. on November 14, 1922. “Chris” graduated from Danbury HS in 1941 and went to work producing the Norden bombsights for the US Army Air Corp and Navy bombers during WWII. On August 16, 1947, she married John H. Smith (also of Danbury, CT). They had three children (Deborah, Kevin & Peter) and moved to Syracuse in 1965. She and her husband divorced in 1974 and Chris never remarried. After the divorce she took a job as a secretary in the English Department at Syracuse University until she began her career with the Onondaga County Comptroller’s office where she stayed until her retirement in the late 1980’s. After retiring Chris did some traveling but devoted most her time to volunteering at her church. A devout Catholic, she became a Eucharistic Minister, was a member of the senior group and volunteered in the lunchroom at Most Holy Rosary Church School, as well as at Sarah’s Guest House for many years.
She is predeceased by her son, Kevin M. Smith, her granddaughter, Rebecca Szymanoski and grandson, Joshua Smith. Surviving is her daughter, Deborah A. (Frank) Szymanoski, son, Peter J. (Karen) Smith both of Syracuse and grandchildren: Brian (Kim) Szymanoski -Buffalo, John (Rhonda) Szymanoski- Syracuse, Jeffery Smith- Winchester, VA., Michele Smith-Garbon- Washington, DC., Stephanie Ann Smith- Winchester, VA., Justin (Rachel) Smith- Winchester, VA., Peter Vermeulen- Fulton, Caitlyn E. Smith- Syracuse, Sean M. (Brittany) Smith- Scranton, PA. and Dillon P (Candice) Smith Rome, NY., as well as 11 great grandchildren.
A calling hour from 11am-12pm followed by a memorial service at 12pm honoring Christine’s life will be held on Saturday, November 18th at Most Holy Rosary Catholic Church 111 Roberts Ave. in Syracuse, NY. Christine will later be laid to rest in St. Peter’s Cemetery in Danbury, CT.
