To The Family of Dr. Weiss,
First of all let me express my condolences for the loss of of this tremendously accomplished man. I did not know Volker but was struck by some of his experiences as relates to I and my father's experiences. I currently serve as the Vice President for Research at Upstate Medical University so have this in coming with Volker. But, more interestingly, Volker was one of the requested scientists for the 1974 scientific exchange with the Soviet Union. My father, Dr. Herman Amberg, was another of the scientists that was specifically requested by the Soviets and so they would have travelled together to Cold War Soviet Union and undoubtedly would have known each other as a result. My father was requested because he was an expert in inventing/developing methods to process liquid waste from paper mills and the Soviets had a huge paper mill pollution problem on Lake Baikal they needed help with. Thought your family might find this interesting; if any of you want to ask more questions from what I know about that visit, you can reach me at ambergd@upstate.edu.
Sincerely,
David Amberg
