Jimmy was like a brother to my dad, Bill, which is why my siblings and I called him Uncle Jimmy. I remember sitting on the floor as a kid listening to him telling stories and everyone laughing. He and my dad were lifelong friends, and my family remembers him and his family very fondly. I send much love on behalf of myself and my mom, Peggy, to Joanne, Patty and Kelly.

Uncle Jimmy, as I referred to him, was my mom and dad’s best friend growing up. I never saw my father laugh harder than when he was chatting with Uncle Jimmy. I thought he was soon funny and an incredibly kind person. Rest in peace

I knew Jim over a period of many years, including all through grammar school and high school at St. Anthony's.
We reconnected in recent years though HS reunions and golf tornaments sponsored by the StA Alumni Asscoiation.
Jim was a great classmate and a true friend who will be missed by all who knew him.

Joanne and family I am so sorry for your loss and am sending blessings and prayers for you. It was my privilege and pleasure to spend time with Jim during his last days at Community Hospital reminiscing about our high school years. My hope is that in some small way my presence helped.

I'm so saddened to read of Jim's passing. He attended our last summer's St. Anthony's class reunion. Class of 1960. Our recent Newsletter featured a great picture of the gentlemen in our class with Jim being centered stage.
I again, saw Jim two days after the reunion at Finally Ours. We shared a few laughs. Jim was a man of great integrity and fun with always offering a big smile.
My deepest sympathy to you, Joann and your family.

I'm very sorry to hear of the passing of Lt. Jimmy Burns. As others have noted, Jimmy was a man of intellect, morality and honor. He was a trusted supervisor who always "had your back" and offered profound advice. He was also one of the funniest storytellers I have ever met. I would listen to his "narratives" for hours.....always funny and profound. He joins his legendary brothers and John Jr. in heaven - an awesome collection of men. You will be missed.

Jimmy was a legend on the SPD. He was my Sergeant on the midnight to eight shift when I first came on. He looked out for me and all the men on his shift. A better boss or man would be hard to find. You could always count on Jimmy to have your back. He loved the SPD and was a great role model for all Officers to follow. RIP Jimmy,

My sincere condolences to Jo-Ann, Jim's daughters, and everyone in the Burns family on the occasion of his passing. I had the pleasure of working for Mike, John Sr., and Harry; as well as with John Jr. (for years) over the course of my police career. "The Fox" gave me one of the best pieces of advice I ever had; and I followed his advice, which resulted in one of the best decisions of my supervisory tenure at SPD. Thanks, Fox ! You were one in a million! May you Rest In Peace forever.

Lt. James Burns was one of my very favorite and respected friends and supervisor at the SPD. James was loved and respected by all of the men and women in our law enforcement community. Affectionately known as “The Fox “ to many of us, Lt. Burns was also a great mentor who always had time for a rookie to provided much appreciation advice.
The Westvale G C Tuesday men’s golf league will miss him very much.
May God keep you and Rest in Peace!
