A great guy! An excellent lawyer. As honorable an opponent as I ever encountered in 40 years of practicing law. He will be missed. My condolences to his extended family.

To the McCarthy children,
It occurred to me, when writing this, that it was possible that none of you would remember who we were, two out of staters who met at SU, married, and moved into the Strathmore area (corner of Strathmore and Robineau) late on July 3, 1974. But it was people like your fun-loving dad and "mathy" mom (She and I were kindred spirits) who were so welcoming and who made the "Strathmore Neighborhood" the special place it is. I have never forgotten those special evenings, when Chuck and I were subs in the neighborhood bridge group, when we sat across the bridge table from Mark and Peggy, and the fun St Patrick's Day parties. When I worked a little on Mark's election campaign for Judge, I learned how badly we, as a community, were going to lose out, not having Mark, with his wisdom, caring, and integrity, on the bench. While Mark was working on securing a Purple Heart for his father, I was especially thankful for him taking the time to share his family story and then encouraging me to share my family story with him with a picture of my father, with his men, serving in WWII as a forward observer in the Pacific.
Your Mom, and now your Dad, are already missed!
Love and Best Wishes,
Stephanie and Chuck Ladd
PS I know that the "apple doesn't fall far from the tree" Sara Ann, when you took charge of 5 babysitters I hired to escort Erica, and her 5th Birthday party friends to the Fall Festival in our park, in 1982. All of us had a wonderful time!

Although I never had the opportunity to get to know Mark, I was lucky enough to meet and become good friends with his daughter Kerry. Subsequently, I was able to get to know him through Kerry's eyes, so I know that he was so very special and the type of person one would feel grateful to have known. The good news is that his love for life and his family and friends will live on forever in the many lives he touched. The bad news, well, if we are to believe in an afterlife, he is finally at peace and reunited with the love of his life, Peggy, and there really is no bad news.......except, perhaps, that many of us have lost any chance at enjoying one of his famous, 'in-person', yo-yo performances! My thoughts and prayers are with all of you, Terry Kais

To the McCarthy Family:
I was very sad to hear of the passing of Mr. McCarthy. My father loved Mark McCarthy and always talked about him fondly. I too loved your father, and have great memories golfing with him and my own father (and with Moody), while listening to two friends and Holy Cross classmates banter and talk about their love of HC. Kindness and decency exuded from Mr. McCarthy whenever you were in his presence. Learning of his passing was like losing a part of my father all over again, but I know they are both in a better place now.
My condolences to you all.

I first met Kerry's father in the 80's as I wore a very cool large men's sports coat. Walking into the McCarthy home I was greeted by Mr. McCarthy saying "Hey that's my jacket!"
I remember feeling so embarrassed that I did not know this. But I caught his sparkle of humor and immediately felt accepted, thinking, this guy is like my own dad. He's a good one.

I knew Mr. McCarthy for only 30 minutes 3 years ago but he certainly left an impression- you know a character when you meet one. I walk by his home several laps a day as it is my routine. I saw he had a ramp and needed one when my husband took ill. I left a note in the door not knowing who lived there. He graciously called me and he shared his ramp information. We had a great conversation. Did he tell me he met his wife in kindergarten? We talked about living in Strathmore, his being an attorney (" I know some good ones"), SU, his difficulty in getting around, and neighborhood friends. He was a funny, charming man. When I went by his home on the morning of the 25h, I noticed a Syracuse police officer at his residence and knew something not good was up. I checked the obituaries and sadly saw it on Thursday. I guess this is my lengthy way of extending my sincere condolences to his family. I am so sorry for your loss. He must have been a true gem.

To the McCarthy Family.
So sorry for your families loss. Mark was one of a kind. I knew him growing up in the Strathmore area. He was kind and gentle and such a good friend. My husband John met him at Holy
Cross and became fast friends ever since till John passed. He is finally with his beloved Peggy. Their love for one another was so awesome to watch.
