Obituary of James Crosby

Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

James Leroy Crosby Jr., born September 7, 1956, in Los Angeles, California, to James Leroy Crosby Sr. and Edith Roberts, passed away on September 1, 2024, at 67.  James's life was a testament to his deep and abiding faith in the Lord. His unwavering devotion to God was the cornerstone of his character, guiding his actions and shaping his relationships with those around him.  James lived a life full of dedication, love, and service. After graduating from Corcoran High School in 1974, he joined the United States Marine Corps (Semper Fi). Following his service, James returned to Los Angeles, where he met and fell in love at first sight with Brenda Fay Hawkins-Crosby. Together, they were blessed with three loving, sons and one bonus son Jerry Lee Crosby Jr.

James and his family later moved to Syracuse, New York, where Brenda and the boys also welcomed his daughter, Sondrea Brice, into their lives.

James retired from the New York State Department of Youth and continued to work for an additional 15 years as an Inventory Specialist.

In his 67 years, James was many things to many people: a son, brother, hero, husband, father, grandpa, everyone’s favorite uncle, and friend. He had a heart of gold, always looking out for others and lending a listening ear. Known for his infectious humor and a smile that could light up a room, James could accomplish anything he set his mind to, earning the reputation of the family and friend “Fixer Upper,” always able to mend things except, as he would jokingly say, “I CAN FIX EVERYTHING EXCEPT STUPID.”

James “Woody” Crosby was a steadfast supporter of his loved ones, always standing by their side with unwavering loyalty. His famous saying, “Even when you’re wrong, you’re right,” perfectly captured his boundless commitment. Regardless of the circumstances, James was known for his relentless support and unconditional love, making everyone feel valued and defended.

Woody’s heart was as big as his embrace. He loved giving warm hugs and expressing his affection, making everyone feel special and cherished. His love language was evident in his actions—he adored having his bald head touched tenderly and always made time for heartfelt embraces. His generosity was also shown in selfless acts, such as driving a stranger across state lines for a funeral and making the journey to support a childhood friend who had lost a parent.

Despite his love for the East Coast, Woody stayed in the California because he loved Brenda.  He believed that God had brought them together, and his devotion to her was unwavering. His passion extended to his favorite sports teams, the Raiders and the Los Angeles Lakers, which he followed with enthusiasm.

James was preceded in death by his father James Crosby Sr., one brother Jerry Lee Crosby Sr., and one sister Dafrine Jones.

Those left to cherish his memories are his wife Brenda Hawkins-Crosby, his mother Edith Roberts (JC), and his children, Joel, Jerrit, Justin (Karina), Sondrea Brice, Jon and bonus son Jerry Lee Crosby Jr., his sisters Celestine Hawkins (Michael) and Felix Brooks (Dan) and a host of grandchildren, great grandchild, nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.  James also leaves behind his beloved children Keisha,  and Brianna.

James will be deeply missed, and his legacy of kindness, warmth, and immense love will live on in the hearts of those he touched. His words of love and generous spirit will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.
