Mr. Carlyle was one of the best teachers I had. I was in his 11th grade Social Studies class and AP in 12th grade. He was very “charismatic,” sometimes chatting about his twin toddlers who seemed to keep him very busy! He told a story of them “in their highchairs at the dinner table having a conversation that he didn’t understand!” I could tell the love he had for his wife and boys!
Please accept my heartfelt condolences, he was a wonderful man and I know will be missed.
Blessings to your family, Elizabeth Rabozzi

I had the distinct privilege of having Mr. Carlyle as my AP US History teacher in the fall of 1984. He was the best teacher that I ever had. His knowledge of American history was so deep but his ability to explain it and make it relevant was uncanny. He was engaging in the classroom and unbelievably funny. He was always laughing! His class was not easy. There was a lot to read and papers to write. He pushed his students to excel. Then, in the spring, he opened up his home in the evening for review classes prior to the AP exam. I remember his basement being packed with students, as he guided and prepared us. Over the years, we kept in touch and "Mr.Carlyle" became "Dave" to me. I always appreciated his letters, cards, and occasional phone calls and visits. Just two years ago, he mailed me a book on the Holocaust that he thought I should read. He was the consummate teacher. The world is a better place because Dave was in it. I am blessed to have known him.
Wishing Peace to Joan, JP, Simon, and the grandchildren.

J. David inspired many of his students at Solvay High School. His dedication to his profession inspired many of his colleagues through-out the School and across departments. He was our department chair who led by example and as union president he led by principle. J. David was also a person who enjoyed life. We were always amazed at his ability to smoke a cigarette and drink a bottle of coke at the same time.
Besides being colleagues we were also friends. He enjoyed a good prank and enlisted students to participate in the fun. Halloween parties, toga parties and pool parties brought us together. He was our friend, in good times or bad. He was there to offer his support. Dave will be missed but not forgotten.

I was a student of Mr. Carlyle in the late 70's just when the AP American History program came to Solvay HS. His passion for history was evident and he always held my interest. A specific memory was when he taught about the presidential elections. He had so much background knowledge which he enthusiastically shared. I did not fully appreciate this class until long after high school. I became engrossed in American History and presidential elections, which nudged me to fondly remember Mr. Carlyle at least once every four years. I remembered the textbook for that class and the author, Samuel Eliot Morrison. Several years ago, I made it my mission to track down that textbook and it sits with my collection. Mr. Carlyle was, indeed, one of the most inspiring teachers I had the pleasure to learn from at Solvay. My sincere condolences for your loss.

Working with Dave at Solvay High School was a wonderful experience for those of us who taught history with him. Not only did we teach with him we were lucky to form a friendship with him that lasted over so many years. There are so many memories of playing practical jokes, monthly meetings with
Dave, watching the success he had with his students and spending time with Joan, Dave and all of us. After we retired in 1998, the friendships continued with winters in Florida, cruises and just spending time together.
He will be missed by so many people. He was loved by so many people.

Fifty years out of high school, I can still hear his catch phrase. When he'd ask the class a question and no one would answer he would say "Yes? No? Maybe? Perhaps? Still thinking?" He will be missed by several generations of Solvay students!!

Mr. Carlyle was my teacher for 11th grade and AP History. He was such a wonderful, caring teacher. I remember going to his house for review along with a dinner.
I received the Solvay Teacher Association Scholarship in 1986. It was presented to me by Mr. Carlyle. Even though I am retired after a 33 year career in education, I remember it like yesterday.
You are all in my thoughts and prayers.
