Syracuse Fire Dept. Captain Robert J. “Red” Flynn ret., 94, passed away on September 10, 2017. A proud graduate of Most Holy Rosary School, Red enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served aboard LST-383 and the USS Tranquillity. He was honorably discharged in 1946 as an Electrician’s Mate First Class. Shortly afterwards he met the love of his life, Marion F. Henchen and was married a year later. Red joined the Syracuse Fire Department in 1949. He retired after 36 years of service to the City of Syracuse and loved every minute of it. Red was an avid fisherman, hunter and enjoyed playing golf and bridge. Red and Marion enjoyed traveling extensively throughout the US and in Europe. He was a past member of the Boy Scouts, American Legion and the Elks. Red was predeceased by his parents, John and Catherine (Murphy) Flynn, daughter and son-in-law Deborah and Roderick Osborne, 3 brothers who were also WWII veterans; John, Edward and Donald, and 3 sisters; Veronica O’Brien, Kathleen Sullivan and Therese Peterson. He is survived by his wife, Marion F. Henchen Flynn, his son, David M. (Tiki), 3 grandsons; Matthew, Eric (Karen) and Jason Osborne, sister-in-law, Diane Drake, and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 15, 2017 at 11am at Most Holy Rosary Church, 111 Roberts Ave. Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 4 to 7pm at the Edward J. Ryan and Son Funeral Home, 3180 Bellevue Ave. Burial will be in Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
