Obituary of John C. Mitchell

John (Jack) C. Mitchell, 83, formerly of Marcellus, passed away on March 28, 2017 in Carlsbad, California. He was born in Syracuse, New York to John and Mildred (Burchard) Mitchell and was a graduate of Solvay High School and Syracuse University, Class of 1956.
He served in the United States Air Force, first in Sioux City, Iowa with the Air Police, and then at Pepperrell AFB in St. John's, Newfoundland as Base Provost.
Mr. Mitchell worked at Travelers Insurance for 32 years, retiring in 1988. He served in many capacities at Marcellus United Methodist Church and was a member of the Town of Marcellus Republican Club. He was also Interim Director of Baltimore Woods Nature Center in Marcellus.
He was a member of the Onondaga County Legislature from 1985 - 1995, representing the towns of Marcellus, Skaneateles, Spafford, and Camillus; retiring as Majority Leader. He was on the Ways & Means, Health, and Safety Committees, and served on the Boards of Onondaga Community College, Cornell Cooperative Extension, and Finger Lakes Tourism.
His retirement years were spent with his wife, Anabel (Cross) Mitchell, in Forestport, NY and Carlsbad, CA.
In addition to his wife of 60 years, Mr. Mitchell is survived by his four children, John D. Mitchell, Gail (Mike) Maples, William (Kris) Mitchell, and Linda (Scott) Dippolito. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Jared (Mary) Maples, Scott (Destyne) Mitchell, Colleen Mitchell, Greg (Amanda) Dippolito, and Jessica Dippolito, and two great-grandchildren John (Jack) Maples and Teagan Dippolito.
A memorial service will be held on June 22 at 2:30 pm at the Marcellus United Methodist Church with a private burial in Highland Cemetery in Marcellus.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Marcellus United Methodist Church or Baltimore Woods Nature Center.
