Salvatore "Sam" Sereno, 95, of Syracuse, N.Y. passed away peacefully at Van Duyn nursing home on Friday, December 25, 2015, with his loving family by his side. Salvatore was born on August 26, 1920 in Pozzallo, Sicily. He married Providenza Caruso in 1945. He served in the Italian Military during World War II. He first came to the U. S. in 1950. In 1966, he moved his family to the home he had established in Syracuse, N.Y. He worked at Allied Chemical for 35 years. He enjoyed gardening, making wine and company. But most of all, he took pride in his nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. He is survived by his children, Anna Distefano (Pietro), Emma DeLucas (James), John Sereno (Maria), Mary Grace Dacey (Patrick) and his brother, Frank Sereno (Maria), grandchildren, great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his wife of 70 years, Providenza, his sister, Salvatrice of Italy, and granddaughter, Patricia Dacey Woods. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff on 3C at Van Duyn for the loving care they gave their "papa." A mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at 10am at Holy Family Church, Fairmount. Calling hours will be held on Monday, December 28, 2015 from 4 to 7pm at the Edward J. Ryan and Son Funeral Home, 3180 Bellevue Ave. Entombment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to Holy Family Food Pantry, 127 Chapel Dr., Syracuse, N.Y. 13219.
