I knew Bill Black at Syracuse - we dated for a time. I was pleased to see that he was at Westhill, where my brother went to school. The school has always had a strong music program, unlike too many other schools. If you can get a child interested in music (not the popular stuff) early in life, it will immeasurably improve his life. It can teach discipline, concentration and is wonderful for the soul. I'm glad he contributed to the lives of so many Westhill students.

I did not know Bill, but I do know a few of his former students. Because of his impact on his students, my music program has received a donation in his honor. After hearing and reading about the type of teacher, mentor, and performer that Bill Black was - I'm am honored to be told I have fostered a community of inclusiveness and respect; much like that of Mr. Black's. I wanted to let his family know about this donation and to extend my condolences to family, friends, and the many, many students that his music programs changed throughout the years.
“Just as ripples spread out when a single pebble is dropped into water, the actions of individuals can have far reaching effects.†– Dalai Lama
Mr. Black's ripples will be felt for generations to come.
With my deepest Sympathies,
D. Rausa - Music teacher NSCSD

So sorry to hear about the passing of Bill, I went to Eastwood High School, and was in Roberta with Him in 1960. We sang in many performances together during that time. The last time I saw Bill was when we had a joint class reunion in 1983. He was a great guy and has left me with a lot of good memories. Rest in peace my friend.

Mr. Black was the best and only constant in my years at Westhill. Whether it was concert choir, the Women's Ensemble, Westhill Singers-- it was my home. I have never experienced as much pride as I did as we won competitions every year. I even used to skip classes to engage in more voice lessons with Mr. Black. Mr. Dwyer even made me sing "The Rose" before I left his class for one of my voice lessons!
One of the most impactful memories that I will never forget, was Mr. Black singing "Bring Him Home" at Lucian Pagano's Service. To this day, I cannot watch Les Miserables, hear that song, and not be enveloped in remembrance. That will never change.
Mr. Black, I will always be singing my "Vienis" for you...I hope you can hear them.
Love, "Bartle Baby"

Whether in a training, professional
Development, or at the start of my own semesters of teaching, I ask the same question... "Who was that teacher that inspired you to become a teacher?" Mine was Mr. Black.
In 5th grade, (my first class with him), he would play songs on the record player and turn the wheel of the projector as he introduced us to classical music. That year, Mr. Black performed Man of La Mancha at the civic center. I had balcony seats with my parents. As he sang "Impossible Dream", he did that little finger move he would do in conducting to let me know he knew I was there. He was our music theory teacher for 5-6 grade before moving to a new position at the high school. Over my Westhill school years, I had Mr. Black for a total of 12 classes. I spent so much time with him, I learned his signature so well, he'd have me sign my own hall passes and sometimes others.
But there was one day that I will forever be indebted to him. The day he told me my guidance counselor was wrong and I should go to college. He said "No one knows you like I do, this is not your place to shine. You will do great in college."
I can not thank him enough for all he has done for me and my family. His singing of "Bring him home" at Lucian's funeral. It was the only time I ever heard his voice crack while singing. I stand in front of students today with a PhD because he told me I could reach that "Impossible Dream". Mr Black, Enjoy singing in heaven with the choir of Angels!
And to Kathy Black, (Died Oct. 31, 2016). He loved you so much, guess he couldn't stay away from you for even 2 weeks. Thank you for sharing your husband with us!

I had the honor and good fortune of performing in multiple shows with Bill including my first (Carousel at J-D) after college. His talent and professionalism was obvious but his kindness and laugh will be what sticks with me. That and the songs he performed...whenever I hear them or think of them Bill is with me. We all stopped and listened when he sang. He was the Pirate King to my Frederic, my good friend and someone I will look up to til the day I'm gone. My sincere sympathies to all his loved ones.

Bill was our choir section leader for a time. He cracked me up with his alarming sounds and joking during warmups, then broke my heart with his baritone, as he sang of longing, of grief, and of joy. I am so glad I got to make music with him, and I thank God for his life and the gifts he gave so freely.

There will be beautiful music in heaven now! Bill Black was an amazing person, kind and caring and generous of heart and spirit! He was as much a mentor and friend as a teacher, in the stricter sense of the word, and had a profound impact on me and my love of music. I am fondly thinking of all the memories I made in HS while in his company and in his chorus class. He will be greatly missed!! RIP, Mr. Black!

Bill Black was one in a million. More than anything, I am forever thankful to him for the safe, equalizing space he nurtured in the music/chorus room. So many of us are blessed to have been his student. I was just remembering that my schedule had no time available for chorus sophomore year, but he still knew me and welcomed me into the music room anyway. Junior and senior years, it felt like we lived there.
My condolences to his family and to all of his students who were lucky enough to have such a dynamic teacher.
