Obituary of Margaret C. Dwyer

Please share a memory of Margaret to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Margaret (Peggy Corbett) Dwyer, 89, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Oct. 9 2014, with her children by her side. The daughter of Edward and Ellen Kearney Corbett, Peggy was born and raised on Tipperary Hill in Syracuse and married her high school sweetheart Robert (Hort) Dwyer. Together they raised seven children. More than anything, Peggy lived for her family and welcomed each grandchild with pure joy. Peggy was the hostess of Sunday morning "Coffee" at her home for many years. Every week she welcomed a growing number of extended family to her home for raucous laughter and storytelling over coffee and donuts. She worked for the Syracuse City School District for 21 years. At her retirement party, colleagues and students at Lincoln Middle School celebrated her as "the brightest light we've ever had here." Peggy made the most of retirement. She traveled the world with her sister, Mary Corbett Kennedy; spent countless hours with her grandchildren; and got together with childhood friends twice a month for their Pitch Club. Peggy was a communicant of St Patrick's Church, Syracuse, and loved all things Irish. She was predeceased by her husband, Hort, in 1982; her beloved grandson, Matthew Doran, in 2012; her brothers, Ed and Jack Corbett; and her sisters, Mary Kennedy and Betty Welch. She is survived by her children, Mary Ellen (Bob) Berg, Margaret (Sean) Doran, Martin (Kathy) Dwyer, Maureen (Barry) Jordan, all of Syracuse; Daniel Dwyer of Egg Harbor Township, NJ; Robert (Ann) Dwyer of Norwell, MA; and Michael (Sharon) Dwyer of Pleasanton, CA. She is also survived by her brother, Frank Corbett; 16 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, both in the U.S. and Ireland; her sister-in-law, Angela Dwyer; and her honorary sister, Mary Fox. Services are at 10 a.m., Monday, Oct. 13 at St. Patrick's Church, 216 N. Lowell Ave., Syracuse, NY 13204, where a mass of Christian burial will be celebrated. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Dewitt. Calling hours are 2-5 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 12 at Edward J Ryan & Son Funeral Home, 3180 Bellevue Ave., Syracuse, NY 13219. The family would like to thank the staff at St. Camillus for their compassion and care during Peggy's time there. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hope for the Bereaved, 4500 Onondaga Blvd., Syracuse 13219 in memory of Peggy's grandson, Matthew Doran.
